Veterans are joining forces with UCF Athletics with UCF serving lunches and hosting a sports clinic for children at the Orlando Union Rescue Mission. Lunch will be served at 11 a.m. and the Sports Clinic will begin at 12 p.m.

The Orlando Union Rescue Mission is located at 1521 W. Washington St.

The Greater Orlando Aviation Authority with the Hyatt Regency at Orlando International Airport is hosting its annual Fourth Of July celebration featuring a concert with the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra on Saturday, June 24, at 7:45 p.m., in the atrium of the Hyatt Regency Hotel. Prior to the concert, a local veteran will be honored for his or her outstanding service.

The concert is FREE to the public and attendees will receive three hours of complimentary garage parking. (Please do not use SunPass/E-Pass.)

The 2017 Wellcentive Medical Scholarship for Veterans is available for the veterans who are pursuing a Doctor of Medicine or a Bachelor’s Degree in an allied health profession. AlcoRehab.org, works towards raising awareness of the alcohol abuse and addiction issues and hoping to encourage as many people as possible to realize the potential consequences of their drinking habits. AlcoRehab.org will be offering three scholarships in the amounts of $3,000 for 1st prize, $2,000 for 2nd prize, and $1,000 for 3rd prize. The scholarship recipients will be selected through an essay contest, and essays are judged based on their originality and content.

Fall 2016 semester has officially begun! Today, Friday, August 26 (by 11:59 p.m.) is the last day to add any classes for the Fall 2016 Semester. If you HAVE NOT CERTIFIED your Fall 2016 Semester Courses, by Friday, August 26 at 5:00 p.m. the VARC CANNOT guarantee tuition deferment. This means you will have to pay your tuition and fees by the posted payment deadline Friday, September 2, 2016.

The VARC is open Monday – Friday, 0900-1700, and we are ready to assist with your Fall 2016 semester certification!

If you can’t make it to the VARC, you can visit our website at www.varc.sdes.ucf.edu and look under the forms section for the appropriate certification form. VARC also accepts completed forms faxed to 407-823-5879.

You may also stop by one of the regional campus Student Service offices and ask them to send it to us!

Registration is now available for the Veterans Learn to Surf Trip. Please stop by the Outdoor Recreation Center on the 1st floor of the UCF Recreation and Wellness Center. They are open from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Learn to Surf will be Saturday, September 10, 2016, and the cost is only $15. This includes equipment, instruction, and transportation to Jetty Park. Transportation will leave from UCF at 8:00 a.m. and should return approximately around 6:00 p.m.

If you have any questions, please contact the Rec and Wellness Center at 407-823-2408. Limited spaces are available!

The VARC will now be open later on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

The College of Business will award the Sloan Endowment for Veterans scholarship to undergraduate and graduate student veterans majoring in Finance. Students applying must be actively enrolled during the disbursement semester.

Sloan Endowment for Veterans - $1,000 annually
• Full-time or part-time undergraduate student in UCF College of Business
• Must be a U.S. military veteran
• 3.0 GPA
• Preference given to Finance majors
• May be required to submit essay on what completing a degree at UCF means to your future and how you use your service experience as a veteran to help achieve success both professionally and personally

To apply for this scholarship you must log into my.ucf.edu, go to the Student Self Service Portal, and click on Scholarship Application. A personal statement (500 word max) and resume is required for all scholarship submissions.

The scholarship deadline for the 2016-2017 academic year is September 30, 2016. Funds will be disbursed during the Spring semester.

The U.S. Army offers one of the most generous and comprehensive scholarships available in health care today. It's called the F. Edward Hébert Armed Forces Health Professions Scholarship Program (HPSP).

If you want to become a physician, dentist, veterinarian, optometrist, clinical or counseling psychologist, Family Nurse Practitioner, Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner or Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist and qualify, you could earn a full-tuition scholarship, plus a monthly stipend of more than $2,200 and in some cases, a sign-on bonus of $20,000.

We hope your spring semester is off to a great start! We have some information for you regarding SUMMER 2016 certification for GI bill benefit users. We will begin accepting SUMMER certifications on Monday, March 14, 2016 at 0900. Please keep the following guidelines in mind:

• We do NOT accept emailed forms.
• We DO accept faxed forms that are typed. Fax documents to: 407-823-5879. It is your responsibility to call and make sure your form was received, preferably the same day you fax it.
• Our office is open Monday through Friday from 9am-5pm. We will be closed for all federal holidays.
• If you come in to certify, you will be given a written proof of deferral. Certifying early ensures your benefits will continue in a more timely manner with less likelihood of a disruption in benefits.
• Remember: certifications are processed in the other that they are received for Chapter 33. Once we start entering tuition and fees after the add/drop period, we process in order starting with those who certified on March 14 and going day by day.
• We CANNOT certify wait-listed classes. You must be physically enrolled in the class in order to certify it.
• Chapter 33 (Post 9/11) users: you must be MORE THAN half-time AND have at least ONE face-to-face credit hour to qualify for BAH. Please note: reduced seat time and mixed mode classes do NOT meet this requirement, per the VA. The best way to be sure is to look at the class section number: if it is all numbers, it IS a face-to-face per the VA.
• Chapter 31 (voc rehab) users: we need 2 business days to prepare your 1905, so please plan accordingly.

On Monday, February 22, the state fire inspectors will be testing the fire alarms and strobe lights in the arena. This is an annual inspection required by state statute, as the arena is located on state property. The alarms will be going off starting approximately at 3pm, every 15 minutes, for two hours.

You are welcome to stay in the VARC during this time, but please be advised that there may be disruptions. If you have any medical conditions (seizure disorders or hearing issues) that strobe lights or loud noises may intensify, please leave before 2:45pm for your safety.

The Spring 2016 Patriot Scholarship is now available from the Student Government Association. To qualify for one of the four $500 awards, you must be a member of armed services ROTC for a minimum of 2 years, currently enlisted for a minimum of two years, or a Veteran. In addition, you must be enrolled in a minimum of 6 undergraduate hours or 3 graduate hours at UCF and have a minimum Cumulative UCF Institution GPA of 2.50. Emergency grants are available to help currently enrolled UCF student veterans who have exhausted all other means of acquiring funds. The student veteran must submit the request for an emergency grant and provide specific details on the costs of the emergency.

• Our office is open Monday through Friday from 9am-5pm. We will be closed for all federal holidays. If you come in to certify, you will be given a written proof of deferral.
• We CANNOT certify wait-listed classes. You must be physically enrolled in the class in order to certify it.
• Chapter 33 (Post 9/11) users: you must be MORE THAN half-time AND have at least ONE face-to-face credit hour to qualify for BAH. Please note: reduced seat time and mixed mode classes do NOT meet this requirement, per the VA. The best way to be sure is to look at the class section number: if it is all numbers, it IS a face-to-face per the VA.
• Chapter 31 (voc rehab) users: we need 2 business days to prepare your 1905, so please plan accordingly.

Don’t forget to come hang out with us in between classes. We have free cable TV, free popcorn and coffee, and quiet study rooms with WiFI.

We also have a new Snack Shop area in the front of the VARC- all snacks are 50 cents (unless otherwise indicated) and we have cold water available for $1 a bottle.

VA Work Study Positions Available:
Veterans and dependents, are you interested in flexible fall employment?
If you are using GI bill benefits and enrolled at least ¾ time, you are eligible for VA Work Study at the VARC!
No formal experience necessary, just a commitment to excellent customer service. You must be reliable, dependable, and a team player.
The pay rate is $8.05, non-taxable. NO evenings, NO weekends, NO holidays required!

VARC Peer Mentor Positions Available:
VARC Peer Mentoring positions are available for the Fall 2015 Semester for those UCF Student Veteran using or not using GI Bill Benefits. Peer Mentors provide Peer Advising, Academic & Social Programming, and Referrals to On and Off Campus Resources. Peer Mentors work between 10 to 15 hours/week and compensated $8.05/hour, and on-site training will be provided.

There will be 2 scholarships available for the 2015 - 2016 academic year. VARC Dining scholarships will cover "All access 7 Dining Meal Plans" for both Fall 2015 and Spring 2016 Semesters, which is valued at $4,154.

Details of ALL ACCESS 7 Plan (Taken directly from UCF Dining Services Website)
This dining plan provides unlimited entry into '63 South and Knightro's, seven days a week. This membership also comes with ninety-six (96) additional retail items to be distributed how you see fit each semester. These retail items are, Starbucks grande latte, P.O.D. any one grab n’ go item, Chick-fil-A chicken sandwich, Nathan's Famous all beef hot dog, Java City medium coffee and pastry, and Einstein Brothers bagel and schmear. Don't forget to download the free mobile ordering app Tapingo in order to redeem these items. Once selected, this plan will be added to the student's myUCF account. Payment can only be made through the my.ucf.edu website. Make sure you stop by and pick up your To-Go box and Eating Made Easy shirt from the Dining Services office located in Ferrell Commons.

• We will begin accepting FALL 2015 certifications on Monday, July 6 at 0900. You may come in, mail it in, or fax it in to 407-823-5879.
• PLEASE NOTE: We do NOT accept emailed certifications.
• If you fax your certification, it is your responsibility to call/email us to ensure it was received.
• The deferral deadline for Fall is Friday, August 28 at 5pm. If you come in to certify, you will be given a paper proof of deferral.

This year's conference, "Student Veteran Survival Kit: Tools to Engage, Empower, Employ," strongly encourages proposals to discuss the tools student affairs professionals, faculty, and school certifying officials, and other advocates can utilize as we seek to engage our returning student veterans, empowering them to achieve success, while personalizing their campus experience.

Study Spaces for Student Vets During Finals

For a 10 day period, before and during finals, the Student Union partners with SARC, SGA, and the UCF Foundation to stay open 24 hours and provide students with a space to prepare for exams. This year, they are also partnering with the VARC to sponsor a Student Veterans study space as well, on the third floor of the Student Union, in room 316 AB.
During Study Union, many events and programs are offered to help students both prepare and relax before their exams.

The VARC will also be open until 19:00 hours on April 22, 23, 24, and 28.

Please take advantage of these oppportunities to study with fellow vets.
