Fraternity and Sorority Life
benefiting Huntsman Cancer Institute

This Feb. 16-20th, Sigma Chi at the University of Central Florida held their annual philanthropy, Derby Days. Derby Days is held by every chapter of the Sigma Chi fraternity nationwide and goes to support the Huntsman Cancer Institute in their initiative to eradicate cancer. In 2013, Sigma Chi chapters nationwide donated their 1 millionth dollar to the Huntsman Cancer Institute as a whole. Here at the UCF chapter, there has been a long history of successful Derby Days, but this year we raised more money for cancer than ever before.

Our Derby Days chairman and past president, Kevin Dvoran, worked tirelessly for months preparing for the week by setting up logistics, marketing to different organizations, and connecting with corporate sponsors to ensure the overall success of the event. “Sororities participate throughout the week to earn points in various different ways including buying “Derbies”, plastic hats that can be bought and collected for a certain amount of points, participating in a volleyball tournament, and attending the end of the week formal banquet. We were able to raise over $11,000, which will be directly donated to Huntsman to help eradicate cancer by funding cancer research. We would like to congratulate and thank from the bottom of our hearts all companies and sororities who participated. We would also like to congratulate and thank Zeta Tau Alpha for placing first and raising approximately $5,000, Delta Delta Delta for placing second, and Kappa Delta for placing third, as well as Alpha Delta Pi, Gamma Phi Beta, Delta Zeta, Kappa Alpha Theta, and Kappa Kappa Gamma for participating. All these groups made this week happen and we would like to thank you on behalf of the chapter and the Huntsman Cancer Institute for all you have done to help raise awareness for and help eradicate cancer." Quotes by Kevin Dvoran

“This is the most exciting thing we do as a fraternity all year. It gives us an opportunity to build relationships throughout the Greek and UCF community all while raising money for an incredible cause that affects us all. Statistics show that 1 in 3 women and 1 in 2 men will develop a cancerous disease at some point in their lives. It's incredible that we can all come together as humans regardless of affiliations to take on something that is bigger than us all. We as college students at an accredited University are so blessed and have been given so much, and it is our privilege to be able to give back to those who are facing much tougher times than we are. As Winston Churchill once said, "A living is made by what your get, but a life is made by what you give." Our goal for Derby Days 2016 will be to raise $15,000 and will look into using a portion of that money to deliver a scholarship to a deserving UCF student who has been affected by cancer and using the rest to help fund cancer research at Huntsman." The President of the UCF Chapter of Sigma Chi, Tyler Wright, wrote these quotes.
