Staff and scholars donated items to Knights Pantry

PRIME STEM and Project BEST scholars and staff recently participated in the annual TRiO Center Open House and National TRiO Day of Service.

Started in 1986 by a Congressional resolution, TRIO Day has been proclaimed a national day of service. TRIO programs across the nation are encouraged to perform some sort of community service-as a way for TRIO to give back to their community and say thank you for its support.

This years’ service project for the SDES TRiO Center was collecting non-perishable items for the Knights Helping Knights Pantry. Nearly 50 participants donated canned foods, dry goods, laundry aids, cleaning supplies, paper goods and personal hygiene products.

“This year we decided that our community service project would be to support campus efforts. It was heart-warming to see PRIME STEM and Project BEST scholars and staff liberally give to Knight’s Panty,” said Rebekah McCloud, SDES TRiO Center Director.

The Knights Helping Knights Pantry started as a class project in a first year LEAD Scholars course in 2009. UCF students wanted to create a food pantry where fellow students would have access to free necessities if they fell on hard times.

The TRIO Day event culminated with lunch catered by Lechonera Latina. Funding for lunch was provided by a gift from Fairwind’s Credit Union.
