PRIME STEM Students Benefit from Day-long Career Readiness

On May 2, the PRIME STEM program in the TRIO Center offered an all-day career readiness event for their first generation, low income and students with disabilities.

The second annual STEM Career Academy offered several workshops on using one’s strengths, resumes, networking, decision-making for graduate school, and a keynote address by Alysse Metzler, author of Recruiting Snitch: Recruiting Secrets to Help You Land Your Dream Job.

The event was developed in response to the gap in post-graduate employment of first generation students and hones in on developing those skills and knowledge bases that are most likely to be needed for employment. The day ended with a networking reception with almost 20 industry representatives from the Central Florida area from diverse fields including computer science/IT, pharmacy and entomology. Attendees at the event walked away with several industry connections for mentorship, internships, and possible career opportunities in the future.

The PRIME STEM Program would like to thank FAIRWINDS Credit Union and the Central Florida STEM Education Council for their sponsorship of this event.
